    Night Time Tips for Braces

    Night Time Tips for Braces

    Night Time Tips for Braces

Every good oral hygiene routine should consist of brushing your teeth at least two times a day, once in the morning and once at night. Maintaining a consistent oral hygiene routine while having braces is a very important factor in achieving optimal oral health. However, cleaning your teeth becomes even more important at night! Those with braces need to take extra care when cleaning their teeth at night to avoid developing any problems.

Why Nighttime Oral Cleaning Is So Important

Everyday Health states that, “nighttime oral hygiene is important because while we’re sleeping, we’re not swallowing, so the bacteria in our mouths increase throughout the night. The nighttime goal is to avoid giving the bacteria anything to break down and feed off.” Those with braces need to be very mindful when cleaning their teeth at night since there are so many more places for small pieces of food to get stuck. If oral cleaning isn’t done properly, you could increase your risk for problems such as teeth stains and tooth decay.

    Recommended Nighttime Routine For Braces

Our team has put together a list of tips to follow when performing your nighttime oral hygiene routine with braces:

Leave hygiene items out. By leaving your oral hygiene supplies out, such as your toothbrush and toothpaste, you’ll be giving yourself a visual reminder to clean your teeth/braces.

Remove your elastics. It’s a good idea to remove your elastic before brushing your teeth/braces and store them in a safe spot. This will help give easier access to your teeth for cleaning and prevent elastics from breaking.

Floss. Flossing is extremely important when you have braces. Braces can hold on to pieces of food and sugar that can lead to problems if not cleaned thoroughly. If you’re looking for an alternative to traditional floss, Waterpik Water Flosser has gained an American Dental Association seal of acceptance.

Always rinse. Once you’re done cleaning your braces, you should rinse your mouth out with water. This will help release any small food particles left behind.
